  32.      Ciprofloxacin tablets should be stored at room temperature in tightly
  33. closed containers away from direct light.
  34.  
  35. USES
  36.  
  37.      Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that is used to treat a wide variety of
  38. bacterial infections.  It chemically attaches to the bacteria and prevents
  39. their growth and multiplication.  It is not effective against viruses,
  40. parasites, or fungi.
  41.  
  42. TREATMENT
  43.  
  44.      Ciprofloxacin is best taken two hours after a meal with a full glass (8
  45. ounces) of water.  You should drink several additional glasses of water every
  46. day, unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise.  Drinking extra water
  47. will help to prevent unwanted effects of ciprofloxacin.
  48.      Ciprofloxacin works best when the level of medicine in your bloodstream
  49. is kept constant.  It is best, therefore, to take the doses at evenly spaced
  50. intervals day and night.  For example, if you are to take two doses a day, the
  51. doses should be spaced 12 hours apart.
  52.      It is very important that you do not miss any doses of this medication.
  53. If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember.  However, if you do
  54. not remember to take the missed dose until it is almost time for your next
  55. dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.  Do
  56. not double the next dose.
  57.      Ciprofloxacin therapy may be required for four to six weeks or longer.
  58. It is important to continue to take this drug for the entire time prescribed,
  59. even if the symptoms of infection disappear before the end of that period.  If
  60. you stop taking the drug too soon, resistant bacteria are given a chance to
  61. continue growing, and your infection could recur.
  62.  
  63. SIDE EFFECTS
  64.  
  65.      Minor.
  66.  
  67.      Diarrhea, headache, light-headedness, nausea, stomach irritation, or
  68. vomiting.  These side effects should disappear as your body adjusts to the
  69. medication.
  70.  
  71.      Major.
  72.  
  73.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  74. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  75. blood in your urine, change in your vision, confusion, convulsions (seizures),
  76. agitation, dizziness, hallucinations, lower back pain, muscle or joint pain,
  77. pain or difficulty in urinating, restlessness, skin rash, tremor, unpleasant
  78. taste, unusual bleeding or bruising, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.  Also,
  79. if the symptoms of your infection do not improve in several days, contact your
  80. doctor.

  82. INTERACTIONS
  83.  
  84.      Ciprofloxacin interacts with several other drugs:
  85.      1. Use of antacids with ciprofloxacin can decrease the absorption of this
  86. medicine.  Do not take antacids within two hours of taking this medicine.
  87.      2. Use of sucralfate with ciprofloxacin can decrease the absorption of
  88. ciprofloxacin.  Do not take a dose of sucralfate within two hours of a dose of
  89. ciprofloxacin unless directed to do so by your doctor.
  90.      3. Use of medicine containing theophylline along with ciprofloxacin can
  91. lead to increased bloodstream levels of theophylline and therefore to an
  92. increased chance of theophylline-related side effects.
  93.      4. Regular consumption of large quantities of caffeine-containing
  94. products (coffee, tea, or caffeine-containing soft drinks) with ciprofloxacin
  95. may lead to exaggerated or prolonged effects of caffeine.  Your doctor may
  96. wish for you to restrict intake of caffeine during treatment.
  97.      5. Use of probenecid with ciprofloxacin can increase the bloodstream
  98. levels of ciprofloxacin and thus increase the risk of ciprofloxacin-related
  99. side effects.
  100.      Before starting to take ciprofloxacin, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  101. any other medications you are currently taking, especially any of those listed
  102. above.

  104. WARNINGS
  105.  
  106.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  107. any medications, especially to ciprofloxacin, enoxacin, norfloxacin,
  108. cinoxacin, or nalidixic acid.
  109.      * Before starting to take this medication, be sure to tell your doctor if
  110. you now have or if you have ever had brain or spinal cord disease, epilepsy,
  111. kidney disease, or liver disease.
  112.      * To decrease the potential for harmful effects on your kidneys, you
  113. should increase your intake of fluids (nonalcoholic) unless your doctor
  114. directs you to do otherwise.
  115.      * Ciprofloxacin can cause dizziness or light-headedness, so patients
  116. taking this medicine should know how they react to this medicine before they
  117. operate an automobile or machinery, or engage in activities requiring
  118. alertness or coordination.
  119.      * This medicine can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.  When you
  120. first begin taking this drug, avoid too much sun and do not use a sunlamp
  121. until you see how your skin responds to short periods of sun exposure.  This
  122. is especially important if you tend to sunburn easily.
  123.      * Ciprofloxacin has been prescribed for your current infection only.
  124. Another infection later on, or one that someone else has, may require a
  125. different medicine.  You should not give your medicine to other people or use
  126. it for other infections, unless your doctor specifically directs you to do so.
  127.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  This drug is not
  128. recommended for use in pregnant women because it can result in serious adverse
  129. effects in the developing fetus.  Also, tell your doctor if you are
  130. breast-feeding an infant.  It is not known whether ciprofloxacin passes into
  131. breast milk.
